They 

The Bishop tells us: 'When the boys come back
they will not be the same; for they'll have fought
in a just cause: they lead the last attack
on Anti-Christ; their comrades' blood has bought
new right to breed an honourable race,
they have challenged Death and dared him face to face.'

'We're none of us the same!' the boys reply.
'For George lost both his legs; and Bill's stone blind;
poor Jim's shot through the lungs and like to die;
and Bert's gone syphilitic: you'll not find
a chap who's served that hasn't found some change.
And the Bishop said: 'The ways of God are strange!'
 
Ells
 
El bisbe ens diu: quan els nois tornaran,
no seran els mateixos; perquè ells hauran lluitat
per una causa justa: han liderat l’últim atac
contra l’Anticrist. La sang dels seus companys ens ha portat  
el nou dret de fer créixer una raça honorable:
han desafiat la mort mirant-la cara a cara”.
 
“Cap de nosaltres no és el mateix!”, els nois responen,
“perquè en George ja no té cames i en Bill s’ha quedat cec;
el pobre Jim té un tret als pulmons i cuita a morir-se;
i en Bert ha agafat la sífilis. No, no trobareu ningú,
ni un de sol dels que han lluitat, que no hagi sofert canvis”.
I el bisbe va respondre: els camins de Déu són estranys!”
